Ok. My daughter just called me tears telling me that this is the best Christmas. She has 4 children and is recently divorced so her paycheck was just enough to pay the bills. The kids school got wind of her situation and decided to put her on their "Adopt this family for Christmas" list. Yesterday they gave her a big sack with diapers, toys for the kids, clothes and shoes. Today she got a call from two other organizations with donations for food baskets.
About a month ago we had decided that for Christmas this year we would ignore the "commercial Christmas" gift giving rituals and focus on the Church services, take the kids to see the lights, sing Christmas carols around the tree, volunteer to take food to shut-ins, and stuff like that. After doing some of that stuff the stress is gone, and it is truly uplifting to see people smile because of our efforts. The kids say that they have never had so much fun and this is their best Christmas ever.
